Color Pencil, one of the oldest instruments of painting and which until today is widely used by amateurs as well as professionals, is an easy-to-carry material, versatile because we can obtain beautiful effects, perfect paintings, both realistic and modern, once we know some techniques to use them.

Painting with a colored pencil of school level, student (intermediate) or professional (artistic), with a minimum knowledge of the basic techniques one is able to extract the best that each category offers.

Lápis são basicamente uma mistura de argila e grafite ou pigmento colorido, na proporção certa, e água. Assim, forma-se uma massa que dá origem aos cilindros (minas), são colocados para secar, vão ao forno, recebem um banho de cera (ou óleo ou as duas coisas).

Enquanto isso, prepara-se a madeira que será transformada nos cilindros que vão acomodar as minas, como podemos ver no vídeo da Faber-Castell que vale a pena ser visto.

Pencils are basically a mixture of clay and graphite or colored pigment, in the right proportion, and water. Thus, a mass is formed that gives rise to the cylinders (leads), they are placed to dry, go to the oven, receive a bath of wax (or oil or both).

Meanwhile, they prepare the wood that will be transformed into the cylinders that will accommodate the leads, as we can see in the Faber-Castell video, that is worth to be seen.

Qual a melhor marca de Lápis de Cor? Essa é uma resposta bem difícil.

Hoje em dia existem ótimas marcas, então podemos começar escolhendo se queremos lápis de nível escolar, estudante ou profissional.

A diferença entre as 3 categorias é a concentração e a qualidade do pigmento e se os lápis tem como base a cera ou o óleo.

What is the best brand of Color Pencil? This is a very difficult answer.

Nowadays there are great brands, so we can start by choosing if we want school level pencils, student or professional level.

The difference between the three categories is the concentration and the quality of the pigment and if the pencils are wax or oil based.

Normalmente os Lápis de Cor profissionais são á base de óleo mas existem alguns á base de cera.

Na linha profissional (ou artística) as cores são mais intensas e mais vibrantes e o lápis deslizam muito melhor no papel, sem esforço, graças á composição feita com óleo.

Já os Lápis de Cor da linha escolar são á base de cera, para que sejam mais acessíveis financeiramente.

Usually the Professional Color Pencils are oil based but there are some wax based ones.

In the professional line (or artistic) the colors are more intense and more vibrant and the pencil slides much better on paper, without effort, thanks to the composition made with oil.

Color pencils on the school line are wax-based, less pigmented, so they are more financially accessible.

A maioria das marcas possui a linha escolar e a profissional, ou até a estudante (intermediária) e assim atende-se todos os gostos, necessidades e situações financeiras. São muitas marcas!

Most brands have the school and the professional line, or even the student (middle) line, and so they achieve all needs and financial situations. There are many brands!

Da linha escolar, gosto da Maped, Giotto, Crayola, mas com certeza existem outros ótimos como os escolares da Faber-Castell.

Da linha profissional, pra mim os melhores Lápis de Cor são da marca suíça Caran d'Ache em especial os Luminance, em seguida temos os lápis da Prismacolor (Premier Soft), Koh-i-nor, Derwent (Inktense e Color Soft), Faber-Castell (Albrecht Durer), Holbein, Staedler (Ergo Soft), Lyra Rembrandt e Bruynzeel.

Existem outras marcas excelentes, como a Arteza, e qualquer uma delas oferece o máximo em tecnologia e qualidade.

Cuidados básicos com os Lápis de Cor:

- sempre que possível mantenha-os na embalagem original pois ele vem em uma bandeja e essa bandeja evita que batam livremente uns nos outros e a mina quebre. Sem embalagem, sem bandeja.

- prefira caixas de metal.

- Não tendo mais a caixa original, guarde-os em estojos que possuem elásticos individuais para prende-los, evitando que batam uns nos outros.

- Não os deixe cair no chão! Se caírem, ou se você perceber que a mina está quebrada por dentro, coloque o lápis sob sol forte por 30 minutos, ou no microondas na potência média-alta por 10 segundos, ou até mesmo perto do forno quando estiver ligado, por alguns minutos. Isso faz com que a cera ou o óleo da mina derreta um pouco e junte novamente a mina tornando-a inteira.

- rode o apontador, e não o lápis! Use apontador sempre afiado e limpo, e a cada 4 ou 5 lápis de cor apontado, faça ponta em um lápis grafite. O grafite ajuda a manter limpa a lâmina do apontador.

- evite usar apontador elétrico porque ele esquenta a mina e consome o lápis rapidamente, além disso, o óleo ou cera danificam o apontador com o tempo de uso.

- use alongador (extensor) nos lápis menores.

Basic Care with Color Pencils:

- Keep them in the original packaging wherever possible as it comes in one tray and this tray prevents them from freely chatting to each other and the lead breaking. No packaging, no tray.

- Prefer metal boxes.

- No longer having the original box, store them in cases that have individual elastics to hold them, avoiding that they hit each other.

- "Do not drop them!" If they fall, or if you notice that the lead is broken inside, place the pencil under strong sunshine for 30 minutes, or in the microwave at medium-high power for 10 seconds, or even near the oven when it is on for a few minutes . This causes the wax or the oil from the lead to melt a bit and reassemble the lead making it whole again.

- Turn the sharpener, not the pencil! Use sharp and clean sharpener and every 4 or 5 color pencils sharpen a graphite pencil. The graphite helps keep the blade clean.

- Avoid using an electric sharpener because it warms the lead and consumes the pencil quickly, in addition, the oil or wax damages the sharpener with the time of use.

- Use an elongator (extender) on the smaller pencils.

Escolhido o Lápis de Cor, precisamos fazer uma Cartela de Cores pois nem sempre a cor pintada no corpo do lápis corresponde exatamente á cor da mina.

É essencial o conhecimento do material por parte do artista, então pegue sua caixa e brinque com os lápis! Conheça suas possibilidades, experimente usa-los em papéis diferentes, saiba exatamente o material que você tem nas mãos e o que você é capaz de fazer com eles!

Experimente diferentes formas de segurar o lápis: o que acontece quando o seguramos pela extremidade? E quando chegamos perto da mina? Como isso afeta a nossa pintura?
