LIVROS MEDIEVAIS EM COURO (MEDIEVAL LEATHER BOOKS) - Part 3

 

Olá!

Este é o último dos 3 Livros Medievais em couro ejá estou feliz por ter acabado, acho que minhas ideias só agora voltaram pro lugar certo! 😂😂

Mas, pensando bem, num futuro próximo usarei todo o couro que tenho fazendo outros livros e até já tenho alguns projetos em mente, todos eles no estilo antigo e medieval.

Hello, everyone!

This is the last of the 3 Medieval Leather Books and I'm already glad it's over, I think my ideas have only just returned to the right place! 😂😂

But, come to think of it, in the near future I will use all the leather I have to make other books and I even have a few projects in mind, all of them in the ancient and medieval style.

Este aqui é o "Rose" e acho que por ser o último que fiz, estava mais "solta", me sentindo mais confiante.

Cortei pequenas partes da capa pra mostrar um pouco de tecido de rosas (adivinha por que botei o nome de "Rose"??) e fiz uma costura torta, aparente, apenas decorativa.

This one is named “Rose” and I think that because it was the last one I made I was more “loose”, feeling more confident.

I cut off small parts of the cover to show a bit of rose fabric (guess why I named it “Rose”??) and made a crooked, apparent, decorative seam.

Na capa frontal, a costura ficou parecendo um selo e mesmo assim ainda botei um adesivo imitando metal, com figura de flor. 

A costura é a mesma que fiz nos outros 2 livros anteriores, uma longstitch cruzada, assim aproveitei pra relembrar essa costura e treinar um pouco.

On the front cover, the stitching looks like a stamp and I even added a metal sticker with a flower on it. 

The stitching is the same as I did on the other two books, a crossed longstitch, so I took the opportunity to remember this stitching and practise a bit.

Tanto este quanto os outros 2 Livros Medievais em couro das postagens anteriores possuem a primeira e última folhas em papel de Scrapbooking. Tenho alguns papéis aqui que parecem antigos então acho que combinou bem com os livros.

Both this and the other 2 Medieval Leather Books from the previous posts have the first and last pages on Scrapbooking paper. I have some paper here that looks old, so I think it goes well with the books.

As folhas envelhecidas também são um charme á parte e sempre que posso envelheço papéis pra usar nos meus livros, dá trabalho envelhecer, são dias e dias que dedico a isso porque gosto de envelhecer grandes quantidades de folhas - e quando digo "grande" me refiro a umas 1000 folhas ou mais.

Aged sheets are also a real charm and whenever I can I age papers to use in my books. It's a lot of work to age them, I dedicate days and days to it because I like to age large quantities of sheets - and when I say “large” I mean 1000 sheets or more.

Outra coisa que não abro mão, faço questão, é de que o papel tenha gramatura adequada pra que possamos escrever com caneta tinteiro sem que a tinta passe pro outro lado da folha. 

Boa parte dos livros artesanais que vejo tem 90g/m² ou inferior, os meus tem 120g/m² justamente porque eu uso cabneta tinteiro então sei da dificuldade que é encontrar cadernos e livros com folhas adequadas.

Another thing I make sure of is that the paper has the right weight so that we can write on it with a fountain pen without the ink getting on the other side of the sheet. 

Most of the handmade books I see are 90g/m² or less, mine are 120g/m² precisely because I use a fountain pen, so I know how difficult it is to find notebooks and books with suitable paper.

- Miolo: 110 folhas (220 páginas) de papel offset 120g/m², envelhecidas artesanalmente, sem pauta, corte rústico. Guardas em papel de scrapbooking, folhas carimbadas em cantoneiras, com carimbo vintage na primeira página.

- Capa macia em couro marrom revestida internamente com tecido;

- Moldura adesivada vintage, aplicada como enfeite na capa;

- Peças de tecido florido envelhecido aplicadas com costura fantasia na capa;

- Costura Longstitch feita com linha resistente na cor marrom;

- Fechamento com trança marrom e vinho e berloque vintage;

- Acompanha saquinho para guardar o livro;

Olá, Amores!

Este foi o segundo Livro Medieval que fiz usando couro de animal e dei a ele o nome de Buttons por motivos óbvios. 😂

Hello, lovelies!

This was the second Medieval Book I made using animal leather and I named it Buttons for obvious reasons. 😂

Interessante como uma mudança de padrão no material que estou acostumada a usar pode afetar tanto as certezas de quem já faz encadernação há mais de 15 anos.

Surgiram algumas dúvidas do tipo: forrar ou não a parte interna das capas, fazer a furação da costura com agulhão ou com ferramenta própria pra fazer furos, qual tamanho de agulha usar.....e quando isso acontece eu estanco!! Eu paro tudo, vou fazer outra coisa qualquer até que minhas idéias se realinhem e eu consiga achar as respostas que na verdade sei, mas que parece que se esconderam em algum lugar da minha mente.

It's interesting how a change in the standard of the material I'm used to using can affect the certainties of someone who has been bookbinding for over 15 years.

Some doubts have arisen, such as whether or not to line the inside of the covers, whether to pierce the seams with a needle or with a tool designed for pierce holes, what size needle to use..... and when this happens I stop!!! I stop everything, go and do something else until my ideas realign themselves and I manage to find the answers that I actually know, but which seem to have been hidden somewhere in my mind.

Incrível essa sensação de ainda ter dúvidas ao fazer um livro artesanal. 

Bom, é como dizem: "recomponha-se e vá em frente", e assim fiz, afinal não posso ser parada por um livro, seria ridículo! 😁

That feeling of still having doubts when making a handmade book is incredible. 

Well, as they say: “pull yourself together and get on with it”, and so I did, after all I can't be stopped by a book, that would be ridiculous! 😁

Com paciência e calma fiz o livro, gostei do resultado e tomara que todos gostem e alguém o leve pra casa. Está na loja, vamos ver se alguém se identifica com ele.

With patience and calm I made the book, I like the result and I hope everyone likes it and someone takes it home. It's in the store, let's see if anyone can identify with it.

Não posso deixar de mencionar que fiz a mesma costura nos 3 livros; acho que é uma costura que tem um ótimo efeito, fácil de fazer mas que precisa de atenção.

I can't help but mention that I did the same stitching on all three books; I think it's a stitching that has a great effect, easy to do but needs attention.

LIVROS MEDIEVAIS EM COURO (MEDIEVAL LEATHER BOOKS) - Part 1

Olá, pessoal!

Sempre relutei em usar couro legítimo, aquele que vem dos animais mesmo, em meus livros mas sempre tem uma primeira vez pra tudo (ou quase tudo), né?

Tempos atrás eu ganhei um monte de couros, e deixei guardados.

De vez em quando ia lá e limpava, voltava a guardar.

Até que, depois de anos, tomei coragem e fiz estes Livros em estilo Medieval em couro.

Fiz apenas 3 livros, sobrou couro, farei mais em algum momento lá na frente. Neste post vamos ver um desses livros.

Gostei do resultado, ficaram fofos, gostosos de pegar e de certa forma aliviei minha culpa em usar couro porque acho que dando uma utilidade a ele de certa forma fiz valer o fato de sua origem animal.

Hi guys! I've always been reluctant to use genuine leather, the kind that comes from animals, in my books, but there's always a first time for everything (or almost everything), right?

A while back I got a bunch of leathers and kept them in storage. Every now and then I clean them and put them away again. Then, after years, I plucked up the courage and made these Medieval-style leather books. I only made 3 books, there's leather left over, I'll make more at some point down the line. In this post, we'll take a look at one of those books. I like the result, they're cute, nice to hold and in a way I've relieved my guilt about using leather because I think that by giving it a use I've made the fact of its animal origin worthwhile.

Sabe porque eu dou nome aos livros que faço? Por que os torna ainda mais únicos, exclusivos, como este Livro Medieval da foto acima e das 5 fotos abaixo, que chamei de Key.

Normalmente me inspiro em algum detalhe do livro pra dar nome a ele, e neste apenas pensei em "chave" e traduzi pro inglês. Poderia ter nomeado de "Rosa dos ventos" ou de "Bússola" mas acho que Key é menos complicado pra escrever.

Do you know why I name the books I make? Because it makes them even more unique, like this Medieval Book in the photo above and the 5 photos below, which I called Key.

I'm usually inspired by some detail in the book to give it a name, and for this one I just thought of “key” and translated it into English. I could have called it “Rose of the Winds” or “Compass”, but I think Key is less complicated to write.

- Peso aproximado: 227 gramas;

- Miolo: 100 folhas (200 páginas) de papel offset, sem pauta, 120g/m², envelhecidas artesanalmente, corte rústico. Guardas em papel de scrapbooking, folhas carimbadas em cantoneiras, com carimbo vintage na primeira página.

- Capa macia em couro marrom revestida internamente com tecido.;

- Rosa dos Ventos, em metal vintage, aplicada como enfeite na capa;

- Costura Longstitch feita com linha resistente na cor pérola;

- Fechamento com trança marrom e chave fantasia em metal envelhecido;

- Acompanha saquinho para guardar o livro;

Let's take a look at the specifications:

- Approximate measurements: 12cm wide x 14cm high;

- Approximate weight: 227 grams;

- Core: 100 sheets (200 pages) of offset paper, unpaginated, 120g/m², aged by hand, rustic cut. Guards on scrapbooking paper, pages stamped on corners, with vintage stamp on the first page.

- Soft cover in brown leather, internally lined with fabric;

- Rose of the Winds, in vintage metal, applied as an ornament to the cover;

- Longstitch stitching with resistant pearl thread;

- Closure with brown braid and fancy key in aged metal;

- Comes with a bag for storing the book;

Este realmente foi o primeiro que fiz, gostei do resultado e fiz mais 2 que apresentarei nos próximos posts.

Não sei se continuarei a fazer mais livros em couro ou apenas usar o couro que tenho e pronto; fui vegetariana por mais de 20 anos então essa questão de animais continua sendo difícil pra mim.

Voltei a comer carne práticamente em 2023, por rigorosas ordens médicas, pois a falta de proteína animal na minha alimentação me trouxe sérios problemas de saúde.

Na verdade o problema não foi a falta de carne mas sim a alimentação errada, sem reposição de proteína, por ter simplesmente decidido ser vegetariana e não ter consultado um nutricionista que me indicasse uma dieta correta.

This was actually the first one I made, I liked the result and I made two more which I'll present in the next few posts.

I don't know if I'll continue to make more leather books or just use the leather I have and that's it; I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years so this issue of animals is still difficult for me.

I went back to eating meat practically in 2023, on strict doctor's orders, because the lack of animal protein in my diet caused me serious health problems.

In fact, the problem wasn't the lack of meat but the wrong diet, with no protein replenishment, because I had simply decided to become a vegetarian and hadn't consulted a nutritionist who could advise me on the correct diet.

Neste último post sobre Livros Medievais temos 2 mini modelos onde a única diferença entre eles é a costura da lombada: uma é reta e a outra é cruzada.

In this last post about Medieval Books we have 2 mini models where the only difference between them is the seam of the spine: one is straight and the other is crossed.

Mas não se engane! Este Mini Livro Medieval só é mini no nome pois ele tem 80 folhas (160 páginas) de papel offset 120g/m² envelhecidas á mão, uma a uma e depois costuradas em um belo pedaço de courino, com um fechamento rústico.

But make no mistake! This Mini Medieval Book is only mini in name because it has 80 sheets (160 pages) of 120g / m² offset paper, aged one by one, and then sewn into a beautiful piece of fake leather, with a rustic closure.

Fechado, mede cerca de 10cm de base x 11cm de altura e pesa aproximadamente 115 gramas, bem leve e fácil de ser carregado pra qualquer lugar!

Closed, each  one measures about 10cm of base x 11cm of height and weighs approximately 115 grams, very light and easy to be carried to any place!

"Que costura é essa?"



Essa é a pergunta que mais ouço todas as vezes que faço essa costura! Eu respondo que é uma "costura cruzada complexa" mas muitas pessoas dizem que é uma variação da costura diamante. Pode ser também.



O fato é que algumas costuras tem um único nome enquanto outras podem ter alguns nomes de acordo com suas variações. Existem outras formas de fazer esta costura, muito parecidas, então acho que é por isso que os nomes variam tanto.



Seja lá o nome que dermos a ela, é muito bonita!

"What seam is this?"

This is the question I hear most every time I do this seam! I reply that it is a "complex cross stitch" but many people say that it is a variation of the diamond stitching. It can also  be.

The fact is that some seams have a unique name while others may have some names according to their variations. There are other ways to do this sewing, very similar, so I guess that's why the names vary so much.



Whatever the name we give it, it is very beautiful!

Fiz apenas 2 modelos com essa costura, e ambos os livros são na cor bordô.

I've only made 2 models with this stitching, and both books are in burgundy color.

Feitos artesanalmentes, em ambos suas 80 folhas (160 páginas) de papel offset 120g/m²   foram envelhecidas á mão, uma a uma e depois costuradas em um belo pedaço de courino, com um fechamento rústico.

Fechados, cada um mede cerca de 14cm de base x 19cm de altura e pesa aproximadamente 290 gramas, bem leve e fácil de ser carregado pra qualquer lugar!

Handmade, each one has 80 sheets (160 pages) of 120g / m² offset paper, aged by hand, one by one and then sewn into a beautiful piece of fake leather with a rustic closure.



Closed, each measures about 14cm  x 19cm and weighs approximately 290 grams, very light and easy to carry anywhere!

Livros Medievais IV (Medieval Books) - VÍDEO

Continuando nossos posts de Livros Medievais (tivemos uma pequena pausa para o Carnaval), estes 3 modelos tem uma costura Longstitch simples mas os fechamentos são bem interessantes.

Continuing our posts showing Medieval Books (we had a short break for Carnival), these 3 models have a simple Longstitch seam but the closures are quite interesting.

Neste primeiro livro, o fechamento é feito com a ajuda de uma roseta metálica onde parte da sobrecapa se encaixa por baixo dessa roseta.

In this first book, the closure is done with the help of a metal rosette where part of the overlay fits underneath that rosette.

Neste outro modelo, o fechamento é feito com um pequeno dente, obviamente de plástico, que é encaixado tornando o livro uma peça interessante e diferente.

In this other model, the closure is made with a small tooth, obviously it is a  plastic tooth, which is fitted making the book an interesting and different piece.

E no último modelo, um dos meus preferidos, o fechamento é feito por amarração de um fio cordonê preto; coloquei uma medalha antiga com o rosto de uma rainha.

And in the last model, one of my favorites, the closing is done by tying a black cord; I've placed an old medal with the face of a queen.

Lembrando sempre que todos os modelos são artesanais, cada um tem 80 folhas (160 páginas) de papel offset 120g/m²  envelhecidas á mão, uma a uma, e depois costuradas em um belo pedaço de courino.

Fechado, cada um mede cerca de 14cm de base x 19cm de altura e pesa aproximadamente 290 gramas, bem leve e fácil de ser carregado pra qualquer lugar!
