DISCO CROMÁTICO #6: Usando a Escala Tonal - (CHROMATIC DISC # 6: Using the Tonal Scale) - VÍDEO

Last week we saw how to make a Tonal Scale, and today we will see how to use a Tonal Scale and here are some examples of how not to use it.

The Tonal Scale can and should be done as a study in several colors, the more we know this tool, the better!

With it we can plan the tones of colors that we will use in our art,  whereas in black and white or colored.

In the example below, I used only 3 colors: blue, pink and yellow; but notice that I used 2 tones of pink, only 1 of blue and 1 of yellow and just because I used 2 tones of pink I got a little more dynamics in the mandala, making it more balanced.

In the 2 photos below, I purposely used colors with the same value of tones, enlarge the photo to see better.

In these mandalas we have a monotonous result that even confuses our eyes a little and does not bring us a focal point. Our eyes get lost looking at them because no element has been painted with a color that we could consider outstanding or main,  all have the same tone.

Compare the result of the 2 photos below with the photo just above and you will see that in the photo above our eyes perceive a path of colors forming almost a spiral, although soft.

In the 1st photo below our eyes are "lost" and in the 2nd photo there is an equality of tones making the painting and the figure completely without visual interest.

We know that white and black are considered neutral colors but we also know that when placed close to other colors, they help to highlight them, as I did with the mandala below. White and black interlacing managed to highlight some colors but in the center circle I removed the white and the black and used the same value of tones with random colors, different from the rest of the mandala. This shows us how much the choice of colors is as important as the choice of tones because if the colors in the center of the circle were better chosen, we would have a reasonable result.

In the mandala below I painted with random colors, without studying, and with the same strong tone. At first it seems that the strong tones look good, making the painting attractive but when our eyes become accustomed to the figure our mind begins to analyze the chosen colors and tones and we see that the excess of badly chosen colors and the very tone that is  only one and the same,  causes confusion in our perpection where once again we do not have a focal point.

In the 2 mandalas below there was a little study in the choice of colors and tones, where we have a focal point where our eyes are guided when we first look at the painting.

Below, a choice of complementary colors but when in a single tone, they become glaring, unpleasant.

And in this last mandala a complete chaos: all the colors of a box with 36 colored pencils were used, and all in the same tone!

Many beginners make this mistake, and I have seen a lot of it in the coloring books that have become "fever" among adults: people try to use all the colors of a box thinking that everything will be colorful and beautiful. It's a  mistake.

The same goes for other types of paint like watercolor, for example, where I see people using all the colors of huge boxes of watercolor.

It so happens that when an artist uses multiple colors in a box, he probably knows what he's doing, it's not any way or not  just to use because the box came with the 36 colors. Most of the time it is to save time.

For example, one of the easiest colors to make and I use a lot is Payne's Gray and I've made a lot of that paint, but I'm tired of making it every time I paint, so I bought a tube of that paint. Sometimes I mix some red or blue or some other color in it to modify it a bit and it's much more practical that I already have a paint tube ready to use than to make some paint every time. Save my time!

Limiting the number of colors in a painting makes it usually richer because we use the pure colors, their tones and their mixtures with each other so the whole painting has coherence because all the paints work in harmony.

On the contrary, when a beginner buys a huge box of paints and tries to use them all, he is jumping a very important stage that is just learning how to combine and mix colors, of course, because one gets used to getting them ready in the box (and usually in an ugly way).

A good exercise is to use the triangle, square, or rectangle method to choose colors on the Chromatic Disc, make the Tone Scale of each of them,  choose the tones and  use them to paint .

The learning with this technique is immense, extraordinary.

In the video below I do a quick analysis on each of the mandalas I used to explain this, and you will see that what initially seems beautiful can be full of errors and even grotesque.

See you next week!
