Como usar Máscara Líquida para Aquarela (How to Use Liquid Mask for Watercolor) - VIDEO

Have you ever been in the middle of a watercolor painting (or gouache)  and suddenly you realize that you have forgotten to leave white parts on paper? Oh my! You have covered with paint the  points of light, the clarity ...... what a despair!

Well, we can try to "recover" some of those white parts that were painted by mistake, by passing a piece of paper or cotton on top but the paint does not come out completely because the paper has already been dyed with it.

In fact, we can remove a little paint if it is only deposited on the surface of the paper but there are paints that actually penetrate it depending on the saturation of each.

I've lost count of how many times this has happened to me!

But there are artifices that we can use to help preserve the white of the paper and one of them, the most "professional", is the Liquid Mask.

Many craft companies that manufacture watercolors and gouache also make liquid masks and knowing which brand to choose, in the beginning, can be a rather difficult task.

These masks are usually made of latex, can be colored or just white but I prefer colored because it is easier to know where mask on paper is. If the mask is white and the paper is white I have to pay more attention to remove all of it.

I've always used the Liquid Mask from Winsor & Newton, I've never had problems with it, but I know people who do not like this mask because they say it sticks too much on the paper and even rips some of the paper out when it's removed.

But, we must understand that the liquid mask can not stay many many hours, or worse, days and days on paper ..... it has to be removed as soon as possible, so we apply the mask, wait to dry, do the painting and as soon as the painting is completely dry we remove the mask, that how we do it!

The liquid mask dries fast, depending on the weather of the place, so I do not work with the glass open; I put a little mask in the godê or even in a bottle cap (wash before) so I do not take  the risk of my mask to dry or create a film on the surface.

Oh, and to avoid the formation of this film I also keep the glass upside down.

In this painting I used a wooden toothpick to make the windows and the fires: I just wet the toothpick in the mask and applied to the paper.

To make the water zig zag I used a fine brush. But the brush has a 'trick' to preserve it: wet the brush in the water, pass in white soap (wait a few seconds), and then wet the brush on the mask and apply. The liquid mask usually damages the brushes so never use a wonderful and expensive brush, and wash the brush with soap and water just after applying the mask.

And how to remove the mask from the paper ??

With your fingers, gently. Or with a piece of soft tissue. Or with a special eraser for it like this one from the photos below.

Just smooth the eraser over the paint to remove the entire mask. In fact this eraser removes any adhesive residue from any surface, for example, when we remove a label that is glued to a surface and it leaves it sticky, just pass the eraser and the sticky desapears.

But I warn you: do not smell this eraser because the smell is very unpleasant!

Mask removed, the painting is ready or just a few details left and most importantly: the white paper parts completely preserved, free of paint!
