Caldeirão de Ferro: Como preparar, cuidar e tirar ferrugem (Cauldron: How to take care of) - VIDEO

Hello!

Today the post is about an interesting subject that can help a lot of people: how to prepare, take care of and take rust from a cauldron or iron pot.

Used since antiquity, iron cauldrons also inhabit stories of fairy tales but almost always related to witches. Magic potions bubbled and would enchant princes and toads.

My grandmother used to make food in them. Early in the morning, even before sunrise, she used to place 2 huge cauldrons to boil water,  not on the stove,but in the fireplace. That water was used to make lunch and dinner.

Then from those huge, black pots (and I think they were magical)  risottos, stews, soups and even baked goods popped up, and as the cauldrons were used daily they really were black, shiny and without any rusting spots.

But every once in a while my grandmother kept some cauldron, she stopped using it for a while, and when she was going to get it again, it already had a point of rust. Because of the cold and the snow the cauldrons often rusted almost completely, but only those that were stored.

When that happened, my grandmother used to make a big bonfire early in the morning and put all the iron pots that were rusty, even if it was just a speck, all of them inside the bonfire in direct contact with the flames of fire. She fed the fire all day, turning the pots every once in a while.

At the end of the day, she let the fire run out, waited for the cauldrons and pots to cool, and then cleaned the rust by rubbing each with a sponge or cloth dipped in cooking oil, sometimes using salt to help.

The rust had disappeared like magic! Then she would wash them all, warm up in the fireplace until the washing water evaporated, and wiped a thin layer of oil inside and out. Voilà! Pots almost new, black and rust free!

Nowadays only those who live in the country can do this method, but what about those who lives in the city, how do they do it?

1- Lave o caldeirão com água e detergente;

2- Seque com um pano e acabe de secar colocando-o sobre a chama do fogão por alguns minutos;

3- Deixe esfriar;

4- Passe óleo de cozinha por dentro e por fora, com ajuda de um pano ou esponja;

Well, when we buy a cauldron or an iron pot, before using it for the first time we must prepare it as follows:

1- Wash the cauldron with water and detergent;

2 - Dry it with a cloth and finish drying by placing it on the flame of the stove for a few minutes;

3- Let it cool;

4- Pass cooking oil inside and out it with a cloth or sponge;

5- Turn on the oven at 200ºC, place the cauldron upside down directly on top of the oven rack. Also, place underneath it a tray lined with laminated paper to hold the dripping oil.

6- Bake the cauldron for about 1;30 hour. Turn off the oven and let the cauldron cool inside it.

7- Remove the already cold cauldron of the oven and pass oil again inside and out, a thin layer and it's ready to be used.

If your cauldron has already been used and you just want to keep it clean and rust free just do the procedures from 1 to 4 above, do not need to take it to the oven.

If your cauldron has rusty spots or small parts, do procedures 1 to 4, then mix 1 measure of vinegar and 1 measure of warm water, soak a sponge in this mixture and with the help of coarse salt rub where  rust is. The coarse salt serves as an abrasive aiding the rust to release from the cauldron. It's a job of patience and time, but never use steel sponge to speed up the process. Always use a soft sponge.

After all the rust has been removed, repeat steps 1 to 4 and your cauldron is ready.

But if your cauldron is very rusty and you feel like throwing it away .... calm down, let's try to get it back!

First, choose a container where you can put your cauldron inside: it may be a bucket, for example. Then mix equal parts of warm water and vinegar and half a batch of sodium bicarbonate into the container (which will already have the cauldron inside it) to completely cover the cauldron.

For example: 1 liter of warm water, 1 liter of vinegar, 500g of baking soda.

If the rust is just inside the cauldron, put the mixture just inside it. But if the rust also exists on the outside, it is necessary that the cauldron is submerged in the mixture. Soak for a few days, turning the cauldron once in a while.

Then remove from the mixture, make a new mixture with 1 measure of warm water and 1 measure of vinegar and with the help of coarse salt rub the cauldron to remove all the rust. This is also a work of patience and time.

When finished, repeat steps 1 through 4.

Dá trabalho pra manter preto, brilhante e lindo? Dá um pouco. Mas compensa!

Veja tudo que escrevi, explicado no vídeo abaixo, passo a passo.

If your cauldron really is too rusty, you can try a mixture of equal parts of warm water and vinegar and a small pot of oven cleaner. Mix these 3 ingredients and place the cauldron  in the bucket, as explained above.

When finished, repeat steps 1 through 4.

Comments:

- To store your iron cauldron or pot, even if you use it daily, put a paper towel inside it to absorb moisture.

- If you do not use your cauldron frequently, do the procedures from 1 to 4, once a month.

- If you use your cauldron daily, procedures 1 to 4 should also be done.

Cauldrons and iron pots have the indicated use for those who have anemia because the iron passes to the food. Thousands of people around the world still use iron pots because they know the health benefits they provide.

Does it work to keep it black, shiny and beautiful? Yep, but it pays off!
