São Lourenço - Café & Sketch #3 - VIDEO

Continuando minha viagem a São Lourenço, ainda no Unique café que é lindo, tem um ambiente ótimo e os doces, salgados e os cafés são excelentes, uma coisa também me chamou a atenção: o lettering nas paredes!

 Continuing my trip to São Lourenço, still in Unique coffee that is awesome, has a great atmosphere and the sweets, savory and the coffees are excellent, one thing also caught my attention: the lettering on the walls!

Um belo trabalho artístico que ocupa quase a parede inteira da parte interna do balcão.

A beautiful artwork that occupies almost the entire wall from the inside of the counter.

São Lourenço - Café & Sketch #2 - VIDEO

Hora do café, e que café!

Em Minas, São Lourenço, o café é muito bom, a cidade também é tranquila e tudo tem cheiro de comida.

O café começa na Cafeteria Unique, com bolos, tortas, doces, sanduíches...... e café, de todo jeito: quente, frio, com chantilli, com chocolate, com leite....... todas as delícias.

Coffee time, and what a coffee!

In Minas, São Lourenço, the coffee is devine, the city is also quiet and everything smells of food.

The coffee starts in the Cafeteria Unique, with cakes, pies, sweets, sandwiches ...... and coffee: hot, cold, with chantilli, with chocolate, with milk ....... all the delights .

E com uma torta dessas, o melhor mesmo é fazer um bom sketch, vamos ver no vídeo?

Minha bolsa de Aquarela pra viagem + Penêdo (My Watercolor travel bag + Penêdo city) - VIDEO

E voltei das férias já mostrando o que levei de material para sketch na minha bolsa de viagem!



Eu adoro ver o material que os outros artistas levam nas viagens e também gosto de mostrar o que eu uso. Até que desta vez levei pouca coisa, só o que me incomodou um pouco foi o fato de ter levado meus 2 estojos de aquarela e o maior ser pesado, mas muito pesado!



No vídeo também mostro um pouco da cidade de Penêdo, que fica a uns 165km da cidade do rio de janeiro, as que pertence ao estado do Rio de Janeiro.

So here I am back from the holidays and already showing my sketch material in my travel bag!

I love to see the material that other artists take on travel and I also like to show what I use. This time I took few material, but what bothered me a little was the fact that I took my 2 watercolor boxes and the biggest one was heavy, very heavy!



In the video I also show the city of Penêdo, which is about 165km from the city of Rio de Janeiro and belongs to the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Almocei no Fritz, comida boa, e depois fui andar um pouco pelas ruas e ver os artesanatos e as lojas de pedras, de velas....adoro!

Na foto abaixo, uma pedra de assar pizza, imagina o tamanho dela!

I had lunch at the Fritz, good food,  then I went to walk around the streets and see the crafts and the shops of stones, candles .... I love it!

In the picture below, a pizza baking stone, imagine the size of it!

Entrei no shopping Pequena Finlândia, um mundo de lojas lindas e de arte.

I went to the Little Finland mall, a world of beautiful shops and art.

E claro que em Penêdo  é Natal o ano inteiro, não importa o mês!

And of course in Penedo is Christmas all year round, no matter the month!

E no meio da tarde já estava de volta à estrada pra São Lourenço, Minas Gerais, que é o meu objetivo. Na foto abaixo, um pouco da Serra da Mantiqueira ainda no Rio.

 And in the middle of the afternoon I was back on the road to São Lourenço, Minas Gerais, which is my goal. In the photo below, a bit of the Serra da Mantiqueira still in Rio.

A Viagem (164): A casa da Rainha na Escócia! (The Trip: The Queen's house in Scotland!)

Ah, hoje tenho algumas fotos da residência oficial da  rainha quando vai à Escócia: o Palácio de Holyrood.

Fundado em 1128 como mosteiro, desde o século XV tornou-se a residência dos reis e rainhas na Escócia e atualmente a Rainha Elizabeth fica cerca de uma semana nele, no começo do Verão.

Oh, today I have some pictures of the queen's official residence when she goes to Scotland: Holyrood Palace.

Founded in 1128 as a monastery, since the 15th century it has become the residence of kings and queens in Scotland and currently Queen Elizabeth stays for about a week in it at the beginning of summer.

Fica aberto o ano inteiro mas apenas algumas alas podem ser visitadas, e já hospedou pessoas famosas como Nelson Mandela, Vladimir Putin e o Papa Bento XVI, entre outros.



Andei primeiro pela propriedade, é de uma paz, um silêncio indescritível. Depois entrei, e segui a ordem de visitação que há no interior. É um palácio enorme, acredito que se visitei 10% dele foi muito.

It is open all year round but only a few rooms can be visited, and it has hosted famous people like Nelson Mandela, Vladimir Putin and Pope Benedict XVI, among others.

I walked first by the property, a feeling of  peace, an indescribable silence. Then I entered, and followed the order of visitation that there is in the interior. It is a huge palace, I believe if I visited 10% of it was a lot.

 O Palácio fica no fim da Royal Mile, em frente ao Parlamento escocês e bem perto do museu Our Dynamic Earth.

Na verdade eu andava pela Royal Mile todos os dias, do começo ao fim, conhecia cada loja, cada beco, cada pub. Tudo gravado em minha mente, todos os lugares por onde andei, era como se eu tivesse nascido e vivido ali por toda a minha vida.

The Palace sits at the end of the Royal Mile, opposite the Scottish Parliament and very close to the Our Dynamic Earth museum.

I actually walked the Royal Mile every day, from start to finish, I knew every shop, every alley, every pub. Everything engraved in my mind, everywhere I walked, it was as if I had been born and lived there all my life.

Objetos de arte, brasões, armaduras, livros, móveis, vestidos, mobília, sapatos, chapéus, objetos particulares, quadros, tapetes, pinturas.....tudo isso mostra como era a vida dos escoceses de outros séculos, como era o reinado de reis e rainhas que viveram no lugar.
Meus olhos percorrem tudo, registram tudo!

Objects of art, coats, armor, books, furniture, dresses, furniture, shoes, hats, private objects, paintings, carpets..... all this shows what life was like for the Scots of other centuries, of kings and queens who lived in the place.

My eyes run through everything, record everything!

A Viagem (163): Um pouco mais da Escócia (The Trip: A Little More about Scotland)

Estamos quase no fim dos posts onde mostro um pouco do Reino Unido e o no de hoje temos mais um pouco da Escócia, país lindo, com cores incríveis que eu nunca vi em nenhum outro país onde estive.



A vegetação é rica, multicor, ideal pra qualquer artista porque inspira, dá vontade de sentar e pintar!

We are almost at the end of the posts where I show a little of the UK and today we have a little bit of Scotland, beautiful country with incredible colors that I have never seen in any other country where I have been.

The vegetation is rich, multicolored, ideal for any artist because it inspires, makes you want to sit and paint!

Além da Natureza, a história da ilha é muito rica em detalhes, em ambientes, lugares, símbolos, casas, vilarejos, castelos....fico pensando em como as pessoas vivam, como era o dia a dia, a alimentação, o transporte, as roupas...e vi tudo isso aqui no Reino Unido documentado nos museus, nos monumentos, nas ruas.



Um povo que valoriza sua história sempre será lembrado!

In addition to nature, the history of the island is very rich in details, in environments, places, symbols, houses, villages, castles .... I keep thinking about how people lived, how the everyday life was, food, transportation , the clothes ... and I have seen all this here in the United Kingdom documented in museums, monuments, on the streets.

People who values their history will always be remembered!

Em épocas passadas também haviam as guerras, as intrigas, as brigas.....mas isso ainda existe em qualquer lugar do mundo, infelizmente, pois somos uma raça bélica, sempre digo isso. Entra século, sai século e os humanos estão sempre com  brigas, intrigas: pessoas contra pessoas, países contra países. Será que um dia teremos a paz absoluta?

Não acredito nisso.

In past times there were also wars, intrigues, fights ..... but this still exists anywhere in the world, unfortunately, because we are a warlike race, I always say that. Centuries come and go and humans are always fighting: people against people, countries against countries. Will we ever have absolute peace?

I do not believe.

Embora eu faça parte dessa raça bélica procuro ver sempre o lado bom das coisas: a evolução tecnológica, científica, de vestuário, de comportamento, de alimentação.....é mais fácil pensar assim.



Quando estou na Escócia é quando meu coração está feliz e em paz.

Although I am part of this warlike race I always try to see the good side of things: technological evolution, scientific evolution, clothing, behavior, food ..... it is easier to think this way.

When I'm in Scotland, is when my heart is happy and at peace.

A Viagem (162): Whisky & Caminhada (The Trip: Whiskey & Walk)

Falar do Reino Unido, ou especificamente da Escócia, e não falar de Whisky é quase um crime, um erro lastimável pois ele é a bebiba destilada mais consumida no mundo.



Visitei uma destilaria na Escócia e apesar de não ter o hábito de beber bebidas alcoólicas (com exceção de vinhos) o aroma de malte dos enormes alambiques me conquistou!



Basicamente o Whisky é uma mistura de cevada, milho, centeio e trigo triturados, mas são adicionadas também outras substâncias que dão aroma e gosto característicos a cada um.

Talking about the UK, or specifically Scotland, and not talking about Whiskey is almost a crime, a pitiful mistake as it is the most consumed distilled beverage in the world.

I visited a distillery in Scotland and despite not having the habit of drinking alcoholic beverages (except for wines) the malt scent of the huge stills has conquered me!

Basically, Whiskey is a blend of crushed barley, corn, rye and wheat, but other substances are added that add flavor and taste to each.



Na Escócia existem 4 tipos de Whisky:



- O Single Malt feito apenas com cevada, que é o mais caro e mais difícil de ser encontrado. É também o mais forte na minha opinião, por isso é servido em copos minúsculos e sem gelo. Uma dose dele é um "mata leão", é tomar e cair em sono profundo, no meu caso.



- O Vatted, ou puro malte, na verdade é uma mistura de dois Single Malt então não vi diferença entre eles.  Também é tomado sem gelo. Pra mim é tomar e cair em sono profundo, quase entrar em coma.



- O Grain Whisky, que como o nome sugere, é uma mistura de grãos e também o mais popular e barato. Pode ser tomado em copos comuns, com ou sem gelo, e particularmente não fiquei fã mas não é tão forte e gostoso como o Single e o Vatted.



- O Blended, é uma mistura de Grain e Single e é o mais popular da Escócia e também o mais consumido em todo o mundo.

In Scotland there are 4 types of Whiskey:

- The Single Malt made only with barley, which is the most expensive and most difficult to find. It is also the strongest in my opinion, so it is served in tiny cups and without ice. One dose of it is a "killer lion," we drink and fall into deep sleep, in my case.

- Vatted, or pure malt, is actually a mixture of two Single Malt so I did not see any difference between them. It is also served without ice. For me is to drink and fall into deep sleep, almost into a coma.

- Grain Whiskey, which as the name suggests, is a mixture of grains and also the most popular and cheap. It can be served in ordinary glasses, with or without ice, and I have not been a fan particularly but it is not as strong and delicious as the Single and Vatted.

- Blended, is a mixture of Grain and Single and is the most popular in Scotland and also the most consumed in the world.



Basicamente o Single e o Vatted são maltes puros feitos com 100% dos cereais maltados em uma única destilação;  o Grain e o Blended são provenientes de diversas destilações.

Basically Single and Vatted are pure malts made from 100% malted cereals in a single distillation; Grain and Blended come from various distillations.

Mas o que é Malte?



Bom, a palavra "whisky" veio do gaélico falado no norte da Escócia e significa "água da vida". Para fazer o malte, os grãos de cevada ficam mergulhados em tanques de água por 2 a 3 dias e depois são espalhados em chão de concreto para germinar. O processo de germinação desses grãos pode durar até 8 dias e durante a germinação os grãos liberam uma enzima chamada diástase que transforma o amido dentro do grão em um elemento solúvel. No momento certo a germinação é interrompida sendo preciso secar o grão em fornos com turfa, e esse procedimento é o que faz com que a gente sinta um aroma e gosto de "defumado" no whisky (uma delícia), e assim a cevada foi malteada. Depois esses grãos malteados serão moídos, cozidos e usados na fabricação de Whisky.



As fotografias são proibidas na destilaria que visitei então o máximo que consegui são essas fotos. Interessante que a parte final da visita é a degustação.......os copos são minúsculos mas pode-se degustar vários tipos de whisky, então saí de lá um pouco "alegre da vida". Uma outra coisa que notei é que o aroma e o gosto do whisky comprado na destilaria é ligeiramente diferente do mesmo whisky comprado em lojas e mercados.

But what is Malt?

Well, the word "whiskey" came from Gaelic spoken in northern Scotland and means "water of life". To make the malt, the barley grains are dipped in water tanks for 2 to 3 days and then scattered on concrete floors to germinate. The germination process of these grains can last up to 8 days and during germination the grains release an enzyme called diastase that transforms the starch in the grain into a soluble element. At the right moment the germination is interrupted and the grain has to be dried in ovens with peat, and this is what makes us smell and taste "smoked" in the whiskey (a delight), and so the barley was malted . Then these malted grains will be ground, cooked and used in the manufacture of Whiskey.

The photos are prohibited at the distillery I visited so the most I could get were these photos. Interesting that the final part of the visit was the tasting ....... the glasses were tiny but we could taste various types of whiskey so I left there a little "cheery of life". Another thing I noticed is that the scent and taste of whiskey bought at the distillery is slightly different from the same whiskey bought in stores and markets.

Então depois de ficar "alegre da vida" o melhor foi dar uma boa caminhada pra voltar ao prumo, e achar lugares interessantes é o que não falta na Escócia. Pequenos castelos, casas de antigos nobres, igrejas em ruínas ou não, tudo é válido.

So after getting "happy with life" the best was to take a good walk to get back on the plumb line, and finding interesting places is what Scotland does not lack. Little castles, houses of old nobles, churches in ruins or not, everything is valid.

Já comentei que a vegetação da Escócia é diferente; as cores são fortes, lindas, vívidas, nunca vi isso em nenhum outro país.

I have already commented that the vegetation of Scotland is different; the colors are strong, beautiful, vivid, I've never seen this in any other country.

Hoje recomeçam os post de viagem e começar com algumas fotos da Escócia é tudo de bom.



Ah, mas por que eu gosto tanto da Escócia? Difícil dizer, então minha resposta é: por tudo!



Gosto das paisagens, das árvores multicoloridas que me dão quase a certeza de que apenas na Escócia são assim; nunca vi cores tão fortes em árvores.



Gosto da História, dos castelos, das cidades medievais...até das igrejas eu gosto, pela arquitetura, mas gosto.

Today the  travel posts start again, and with some photos of Scotland,  too good.

Oh, but why do I like Scotland so much? Hard to say, so my answer is: for everything!

I like the landscapes, the multicolored trees that make me almost sure that only in Scotland is possible to see trees like those; I've never seen such strong colors on trees!

I like the History, the castles, the medieval cities ... I like even the churches, for their architecture, but I like them.

Gosto dos trabalhos em pedras e madeiras, de tudo que é antigo, medieval... me lembra minha infância na casa da minha avó, na Europa.

O Reino Unido é completo quando falamos de medievalismo, de História Antiga, de reinados. Claro que tem a modernidade, a tecnologia de hoje (que também gosto bastante)...... mas me interesso pelo "ontem". Gosto de ver tudo, saber das histórias, dos contos, das pessoas daquelas épocas, das roupas, dos costumes.

Até das batalhas.

I like the craft work on stones and woods, everything that is ancient, medieval ... reminds me of my childhood at my grandmother's house in Europe.

The United Kingdom is complete when we speak of medievalism, of Ancient History, of reigns. Of course there is the modernity, the technology of today (which I also like a lot) ...... but I am interested in "yesterday". I like to see everything, to know the stories, the tales, the people of those times, the clothes, the customs.

Even the battles.

Ah, e a comida? Gosto de ver, acho interessante o tipo de comida de antes e o atual e embora eu tenha hábitos 'diferentes', menos 'carnívoros', em toda Escócia sempre passei bem pra encontrar pratos vegetarianos nos lugares onde comi. Até no restaurante do Jamie Oliver eu fui e comi um delicioso risoto de limão!

Oh, and about the food? I like to see it, I find interesting the type of food from before and at the present time and although I have 'different' habits, less 'carnivores', throughout Scotland I always went well to find vegetarian dishes in the places where I ate. I've even gone to Jamie Oliver's restaurant  and had a delicious lemon risotto!

A Viagem (160): Doune Castle & Outlander

Doune Castle, é o verdadeiro nome do castelo que aparece na série Outlander, filmada na Escócia, e que conta a vida de um casal diferente: ela, Claire,  fez uma viagem no tempo e retornando ao passado conheceu Jamie, casou-se com ele, teve uma filha ....... mas não vou contar mais, veja a série porque é fascinante, principalmente pra quem gosta de história, de época medieval e da Escócia!

O nome fictício desse castelo na série televisiva é Leoch Castle, e além de Outlander, também foram gravados ali cenas de Monty Python and the Holy Grail e Game of Thrones.

Claro que parei pra desenhar mas pintei depois, já em casa, em Edinburgh. 

Doune Castle is the actual name of the castle that appears in the series Outlander, filmed in Scotland, and tells the life of a different couple: she, Claire, made a trip back in time and returned to the past, met Jamie, married him , had a daughter ....... but I will not tell more, watch the series because it is fascinating, especially for those who like history, medieval times and Scotland!

The fictitious name of this castle in the television series is Leoch Castle, and in addition to Outlander,  scenes of Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Game of Thrones were recorded there.

Of course I stopped to sketch but finished the painting later, at home in Edinburgh.

O castelo foi construido no século 13 pelo Duque de Albany,  terceiro filho do rei Robert II da Escócia.  Seu irmão era o rei da Escócia mas devido a complicações  por causa de uma queda de cavalo o reino passou para as mãos de um regente e o duque passou a ser o comandante do reino. Não se tornou rei porque morreu antes do irmão, e assim o rei passou a ser seu filho que foi morto pouco tempo depois.  Quem passou a ser o rei foi James I, que tornou-se James I da Inglaterra e VI da Escócia e com a mudança do reinado para Londres, o castelo de Doune perdeu o status de castelo real.

The castle was built in the 13th century by the Duke of Albany, the third son of King Robert II of Scotland. His brother was the king of Scotland but due to complications after a fall of a horse the kingdom passed into the hands of a regent and the duke happened to be the commander of the kingdom. He did not become king because he died before his brother, and so the king became his son who was killed shortly after. Who became the king was James I, who became James I of England and VI of Scotland and with the change of the reign to London, Doune castle lost the status of royal castle.

Passeei bastante tanto fora quanto dentro do castelo fui em todos os cômodos onde era permitido entrar, sentei em todas as cadeiras e bancos, tirei centenas de fotos. É um castelo pequeno, um pouco em ruínas, mas encantador, eu viveria muito bem nele!

I spent quite as much time outside as inside the castle: I went into all the rooms where I was allowed to enter, I sat on all the chairs and benches, I took hundreds of photos. It is a small castle, a little ruined, but charming, I would live very well in it!

A temperatura dentro dele era fria, quase congelante. Pequeno e feito de pedras acho que o frio fica ainda mais intenso. 

Ah, e as portas! Tenho uma fascinação por portas mas não encontrei muitas, e eram simples, sem muitos adornos nem entalhes.

The temperature inside it was cold, almost freezing. Small and made of stones I think the cold gets even more intense.

Oh, and the doors! I have a fascination for doors but I did not find many, and they were simple, without much adornment or notches.

As escadas que levam para os quartos são bem estreitas, as salas são pequenas mas os quartos são minúsculos. Fico pensando como as pessoas daquela época, principalmente na Escócia já que os homens eram grandes, faziam pra dormir em locais tão apertados. Outros tempos.



Foi um ótimo passeio, ainda mais porque me colocou na época medieval....minha imaginação me fez ficar em meio a reis, rainhas, música escocesa, dança, comidas fumegantes...e guerras de clãs!



Amei!

The stairs leading to the rooms are quite narrow, the rooms are small but the bedrooms are tiny. I wonder how the people of that time, especially in Scotland since the men were big, made to sleep in places so tight. Other times.



It was a great tour, even more so  because it put me in medieval times .... my imagination made me stand in the middle of kings, queens, scottish music, dancing, steaming food ... and clan wars!

Loved it!

A Viagem (159): Sketch de Museu e Natal em Edinburgh! (Museum Sketch and Christmas in Edinburgh!)

Antes de falar do Natal aqui está o Museu de Edinburgh que possui objetos, roupas, armas, arte decorativa de várias épocas e em especial da guerra civil por volta de 1638, além de tudo isso também foi mostrado na série Outlander (adoro!) quando Claire foi em busca de pistas pra saber se seu amado Jamie Fraser sobreviveu a essa guerra.



E eu tive a sorte de pode desenhar essa bela construção que abriga parte da história escocesa no meu sketchbook!

 Before talking about Christmas here is the Edinburgh Museum which has objects, clothes, weapons, decorative art from various eras and especially details of the civil war around 1638, and all this was also shown in the series Outlander (I love it!) When Claire went in search of clues to find out if her beloved Jamie Fraser survived this war.

And I was lucky enough to be able to draw this beautiful building that houses part of Scottish history in my sketchbook!

E agora falando do Natal......o ano inteiro é Natal em Edinburgh, sim, porque existem lojas especializadas em Natal que ficam abertas o ano todo! Aliás, também vi uma loja assim em York e fiquei fascinada: como será que se sustentam durante o ano se o Natal é apenas em Dezembro?

Bom, coisas que só acontecem na Escócia, deve ser essa a explicação.

And now talking about Christmas ...... the whole year is Christmas in Edinburgh, yes, because there are specialist Christmas shops that are open all year round! Incidentally, I also saw a store like this in York and I was fascinated: how do they sustain themselves during the year if Christmas is only in December?

Well, things that only happen in Scotland, that should be the explanation.

E agora, mais uma volta pela cidade antes que escureça. Em Dezembro os dias são curtos e frios, o sol se esconde, tímido, e é hora de ir pra casa ficar de frente pra lareira tomando um bom café!

E pra voltar pra casa sempre é bom conhecer atalhos, portas que levam a pátios e cortam caminho, atravessam ruas e quando vemos parte do caminho já se foi.

And now, one more turn around the city before it gets dark. In December the days are short and cold, the sun is hiding, timid, and it's time to go home and face the fireplace with a good coffee!

And to go home is always good to know shortcuts, doors that lead to patios and cut path, cross streets and when we see part of the way is gone.
